Who has to verify their identity for the children's account and who has access to the account?

To open the children's account, you must verify the identity of the child's legal guardians and submit a copy of the child's birth certificate. After the account is opened, the legal guardians have access to it. As soon as the child comes of age, we will contact you so that your child can verify their identity and gain access to the account once they reach adulthood.

With whom is the asset management contract concluded for the children's account?

When opening a children's savings plan or children's account, the child's legal guardians, usually the parents, conclude an asset management contract with quirion as well as an account and custody management contract with Quirin Privatbank on behalf of the child. The contracting party is therefore the child itself.

Can grandparents open a children's account?

A children's account can only be opened by all persons with parental custody. Grandparents are welcome, provided they do not have parental custody, to pay into the children's account by standing order. The grandparents receive the IBAN from those with parental custody.

Who can open a children's account?

Only those with parental custody can open a children's account. The assets belong to the child, but the child cannot dispose of them until coming of age. Those with parental custody can dispose of them.

How does a children's account work?

A children's account is opened in the child's name — the assets legally belong to the child. Until the child comes of age, the legal guardians manage the account in trust. At 18 it is automatically converted into an individual account.

At quirion you open the children's account digitally. This requires:

Identity verification of both parents

The child's birth certificate

Savings plan from €25/month or one-off investment. Management fees: 0.48 % p.a. The child has their own saver's lump-sum allowance of €1,000/year — capital gains up to this limit remain tax-free.

The children's account is excluded from new-customer promotions.

Does a children's account make sense?

A children's account makes sense if you want to build up wealth for a child over the long term, for example for education, university or the start of adult life. Thanks to the long investment horizon of often more than ten years, price fluctuations can be better balanced out. In addition, the child is entitled to their own saver's lump-sum allowance (the annual tax-free allowance for capital gains) of 1,000 euros per year, so that gains up to this limit remain tax-free. Furthermore, a child is also entitled to the basic tax-free allowance of around 12,000 euros. The basic tax-free allowance is the part of income that remains tax-free in Germany. At quirion you can pay into the children's account from 25 euros a month, with transparent management fees of just 0.48 % p.a.

How can you open a children's account?

A children's account is opened in the child's name and managed by the legal guardians until the child comes of age. An account without parental access is not legally possible for minor children, as the parents hold the legal guardianship. At quirion, however, grandparents can pay into the children's account, while the opening and management is carried out by those with parental custody. Alternatively, as a grandparent you could open your own account in your name and transfer the assets later, whereby the gift-tax allowances must be observed.

Why a children's account?

A children's account makes it possible to build up wealth in the child's name over the long term -- for example for university, education or the start of adult life in general. Thanks to the long investment horizon of often considerably more than ten years, larger interim price fluctuations can be balanced out. In addition, the child is entitled to their own saver's lump-sum allowance (the annual tax-free allowance for capital gains) of 1,000 euros per year. Furthermore, a child is also entitled to the basic tax-free allowance of around 12,000 euros. The basic tax-free allowance is the part of your income that remains tax-free in Germany. At quirion you can pay into a children's account from as little as 25 euros a month and additionally make one-off investments (or withdrawals). The fees amount to 0.48 % p.a. These cover all management costs. The additional ETF product costs of around 0.17 % p.a. on average across the strategies of the Global Portfolio (as at March 2026) are already factored into the ETF performance and are not charged separately.

Important: on coming of age, the (former) child becomes the sole holder of the (former) children's account. From this point on, the parents lose their power of disposal, and the child (now an adult) can freely dispose of the accumulated assets themselves.

What tax advantages are there when investing for children?

Children are entitled to their own tax-free allowances. The saver's lump-sum allowance (the annual tax-free allowance for capital gains) amounts to 1,000 euros per year. If a child's capital gains are likely to exceed the saver's lump-sum allowance of 1,000 euros per year, a non-assessment certificate (NV-Bescheinigung) may make sense. If the child's total income in 2026 is below the basic tax-free allowance, capital gains of up to around 13,000 euros per year can be received tax-free together with the saver's lump-sum allowance. The non-assessment certificate is applied for at the responsible tax office and is generally valid for up to three years. Please note that tax rules can change and that, in individual cases, tax advice may be worthwhile.

Can I withdraw money from the children's account?

Yes, withdrawals from the children's account are generally possible. However, since the assets legally belong to the child, withdrawals are tied to the child's welfare. The legal guardians manage the account in trust until the child comes of age. At quirion you can request withdrawals via the customer account. Please note that withdrawals must be made for the benefit of the child, for example for education costs.

How can I invest money for my grandchild without the parents' access?

A children's account is opened in the child's name and managed by the legal guardians until the child comes of age. An account without parental access is not legally possible for minor children, as the parents hold the legal guardianship. At quirion, however, grandparents can pay into the children's account, while the opening and management is carried out by those with parental custody. Alternatively, as a grandparent you could open your own account in your name and transfer the assets later, whereby the gift-tax allowances must be observed.

What is a non-assessment certificate for a children's account?

A non-assessment certificate (Nichtveranlagungsbescheinigung) is a document from the tax office confirming that the child is not expected to have to pay income tax. If a child's capital gains are likely to exceed the saver's lump-sum allowance of 1,000 euros per year, a non-assessment certificate may make sense. If the child's total income in 2026 is below the basic tax-free allowance of around 12,000 euros, capital gains of up to around 13,000 euros per year can be received tax-free together with the saver's lump-sum allowance. The non-assessment certificate is applied for at the responsible tax office and is generally valid for up to three years.

Are the parents allowed to access the children's account?

Yes, until the child comes of age the children's account is managed by the legal guardians on behalf of the child. The parents can manage deposits, savings plans and withdrawals, but in doing so they are tied to the child's welfare, as the assets legally belong to the child. On reaching adulthood, the child gains full access to the account; for this, a renewed identity verification takes place at quirion. The account is then automatically converted into an individual account.

How high is the tax-free allowance for children with an ETF savings plan?

Children too are entitled to tax-free allowances on capital gains. The saver's lump-sum allowance (the annual tax-free allowance for capital gains) currently amounts to 1,000 euros per year. Capital gains from an ETF savings plan remain tax-free up to this limit. If a child's capital gains are likely to exceed the saver's lump-sum allowance of 1,000 euros per year, a non-assessment certificate may make sense. If the child's total income in 2026 is below the basic tax-free allowance of around 12,000, capital gains of up to around 13,000 euros per year can be received tax-free together with the saver's lump-sum allowance. The non-assessment certificate is applied for at the responsible tax office and is generally valid for up to three years.

How can you open a children's account?

A children's account at quirion is opened digitally by the legal guardians. Opening it requires the identity verification of both parents as well as the child's birth certificate. The entire process runs online. You can then pay into the account by savings plan from 25 euros a month or by one-off investment. The management fees amount to 0.48 % p.a. Can I submit an exemption order for my children's account?

Yes, you can submit a separate exemption order for the children's account. This keeps capital gains tax-free up to the saver's lump-sum allowance (the annual tax-free allowance for capital gains) of currently 1,000 euros per year. At quirion you set up the exemption order directly in the customer account of the children's account. If a child's capital gains are likely to exceed the saver's lump-sum allowance of 1,000 euros per year, a non-assessment certificate may make sense. If the child's total income in 2026 is below the basic tax-free allowance, capital gains of up to around 13,384 euros per year can be received tax-free together with the saver's lump-sum allowance and the special-expenses lump-sum allowance. The non-assessment certificate is applied for at the responsible tax office and is generally valid for up to three years.

How much do I have to invest as a minimum with the children's account?

At quirion you can set up a savings plan for your child from a monthly savings instalment of €25. There is no minimum investment. You can also, of course, top up flexibly whenever you like.

Can the children's account also be combined with sustainability?

Yes, with the children's account you have various options regarding the composition of your portfolio. With the children's account either the global investment strategy or the sustainable portfolio can be used.
