By adopting the Paris Climate Agreement, governments from all over the world resolved to pursue a more sustainable path for our planet and our economy. The financial system plays a key role in this, because private capital is to be redirected into more sustainable investments. After all, sustainable development is not possible without the corresponding capital.

Several factors are usually decisive for investment decisions, but in the view of the European Commission the topics of Environment, Social and Governance – ESG for short – are often not given sufficient consideration.
Asset managers are therefore expressly required to factor sustainability aspects into investment decisions and to make it more transparent to investors how these sustainability factors are taken into account (cf. the European Commission's Action Plan: Financing Sustainable Growth of 08/03/2018).
quirion intends to systematically implement sustainability risks as a decision-making criterion in the investment decision process for all asset management strategies. This is already the case today in the “Sustainable Portfolio” asset management. To this end, quirion's investment committee is presented with a sustainability analysis alongside a due diligence, on the basis of which investment decisions are made.
Building wealth with good return prospects is one thing. But at the same time supporting topics such as the environment and social responsibility is another. For all those who want both, quirion offers eleven sustainable strategies – tailored to your individual risk appetite.

Anyone who invests sustainably takes responsibility with their investment. That is why we have developed an investment strategy that promotes change. The result is the optimal balance between profitability and sustainability.
Your sustainable portfolio is composed according to strict, scientifically grounded selection criteria. Your money is invested worldwide in over 3,300 companies and around 1,000 debtors that meet our sustainability criteria.
With us, there are no hidden costs. quirion is a digital asset manager. With our sustainable ETF portfolios too, we focus on efficiency – one of the most important levers for returns.

Here you will find an overview of the historical performance of our strategies.
The following information relates to all variants of our “Sustainable Portfolio” asset management (each with its own split of bonds and equities), i.e. the strategies 0/100, 10/90, 20/80, 30/70, 40/60, 50/50, 60/40, 70/30, 80/20, 90/10 and 100/0.
This financial product promotes environmental or social characteristics but does not aim to make sustainable investments.
When selecting suitable financial products, we take into account companies that live up to their responsibility. The three areas of responsibility are Environment, Social and Governance. Your money is intended to be invested in companies and sectors that operate in an ESG-compliant manner.

For composing the Sustainable Portfolio, beyond the ESG criteria we also draw on the proven scientific findings of financial market research. Accordingly, the portfolio is broadly diversified in order to reduce dependence on the performance of individual companies, sectors, countries or regions and to systematically harvest the returns of the global capital market.
For fund selection, we use data from the provider MSCI ESG Research LLC, which has developed a rating methodology for collecting, consolidating and evaluating characteristics for key environmental and social themes as well as key themes of good corporate governance. Key themes here are ownership and control structures, the composition of the board, remuneration and accounting, as well as corporate conduct in relation to business ethics and tax transparency. The area of corporate governance and its key themes are regarded as fundamentally relevant. The area therefore contributes at least 30 per cent to the overall value of the ESG Score in every sector. In the assessment, transparency and/or deviations from the principles of good corporate governance lead to deductions.
With us, you invest in carefully selected ETFs and index-tracking funds that cover over 3,300 companies and around 1,000 debtors. This diversification minimises the unsystematic risks in the account. Furthermore, we pursue a forecast-free and cost-efficient approach that is not based on individual securities.
To ensure fair return prospects for our clients, we deliberately refrain from a one-sided focus on sustainability when constructing the portfolio and do not exclude every conceivably controversial topic. Nevertheless, with our account structure we achieve significant improvements in key sustainability metrics.
The “Sustainable Portfolio” asset management contains passively managed index funds (ETFs) and capital market funds. The proportion of asset classes that take environmental and/or social characteristics into account is 99.6 per cent; the proportion of other asset classes that do not take these characteristics into account is 0.40 per cent. All investments comprise exclusively indirect risk exposures.
An investment decision is made by the investment committee of quirion AG on the basis of a sustainability analysis. The investments are monitored on an ongoing basis. For monitoring, we use the provider MSCI ESG Research LLC. It has developed methods for measuring environmental and social characteristics. These methods are validated by the external auditing firm BDO USA Inc. What is measured is companies' resilience to long-term risks in the areas of Environment, Social and Governance. The measurement result is presented in the form of the ESG Quality Score. Companies are rated on a scale from “AAA” to “CCC”, depending on the ESG risks relevant to the respective sector and on companies' ability to manage these risks compared with competitors. The higher the ESG Quality Score, the better for the environment, for society and, in the long term, for the companies themselves. Through the regular collection of data on the environmental and social characteristics as well as the sustainability indicators, the financial product is monitored throughout its entire life cycle. We have the values of our portfolio validated by the Institut für Vermögensaufbau (IVA), which in turn obtains data from Institutional Shareholder Services Inc. (ISS ESG), MSCI and other sources. The supplied data is compared and analysed internally on a quarterly basis and, in the event of discrepancies, presented to the investment committee for a possible re-validation of the investment decision.
We carry out an extensive economic and sustainability-related product analysis on the market on your behalf. Information is the key to being able to assess and continuously monitor a company's sustainability. In the past, fund managers made subjective decisions because of the poor data basis. This has now changed thanks to technological progress – and as a financial services provider we make use of these new possibilities.
Step 1
The first step in the product selection process is an analysis of the available product providers. In addition to general quality criteria with regard to index replication, we also pay attention to the sustainability of the fund providers.
Step 2
In the second step, we select funds that exclude companies according to the following criteria:
Step 3
In the third step, our asset management team analyses and combines the remaining products both from a sustainability perspective (ESG Quality Score and CO2 emissions) and with regard to a number of scientifically substantiated quality characteristics. These include, in particular, risk spreading and costs.

quirion AG works with the sustainability data of MSCI ESG Research LLC (MSCI). This data source enables us to integrate our responsible approach into ETF selection. In doing so, publicly accessible company documents and data from alternative sources – including those from governments, authorities and non-governmental organisations – are processed and evaluated by machine. In addition, MSCI draws on a wide range of media for its data gathering.
To safeguard data quality, MSCI is validated by the external auditing firm BDO USA Inc. In addition, the data determined by MSCI is validated by us internally on a quarterly basis on the basis of the analysis by the Institut für Vermögensaufbau (IVA), which in turn obtains data from Institutional Shareholder Services Inc. (ISS ESG), MSCI and other sources. No proportion of the data is estimated.
The ESG data is downloaded monthly from the online portal “MSCI ESG Manager” and stored in structured form in a local file. In this file, the data sets are integrated with the corresponding allocation data in order to provide a consolidated data basis for further steps of document creation and data publication.
Part of the data is supplied by the companies themselves. It may therefore be difficult in individual cases to verify these companies' internal processes. In addition, there is a certain degree of discretion in evaluating the data. Owing to the high level of diversification of the portfolio, such matters play a subordinate role in the overall assessment of the ESG characteristics.
As described above, we draw on external ESG ratings from MSCI to assess compliance with ESG criteria for financial instruments. MSCI, for its part, has implemented processes to ensure data quality. Internally, decisions concerning the sustainable investment strategies are regularly analysed by the investment committee. In addition to the suitability of a financial instrument and general criteria such as costs and the risk-return ratio, the investment committee also considers, among other things, compliance with ESG criteria.
An engagement policy, for example through the exercise of voting rights, is not part of the investment strategy. This is because the investments within the scope of asset management are made regularly on a passive basis via ETFs and not directly in the respective companies. Influence is exerted indirectly through the selection of the respective ETFs, in which environmental and social characteristics are taken into account, and through the preference for fund companies that use their fiduciary duties to move companies towards more sustainable business practices.
No reference value has been designated for the attainment of the environmental and/or social characteristics promoted by the strategy.

quirion was first honoured in autumn 2023 by the Deutsches Institut für Nachhaltigkeit und Ökonomie with the “Gesicherte Nachhaltigkeit” (Assured Sustainability) seal of approval . In an audit process, our individual environmental, socio-economic and economic competencies are regularly examined and assessed. The institute confirms every year that we are already actively implementing sustainability throughout the company and that we invest continuously in a sustainable future in order to meet the economic, environmental and social needs of present and future generations.
The seal awarded to us attests that we have:
Our central guiding principle is the optimisation of our processes taking into account our sustainable economic orientation, and the integration of a sustainable corporate culture. In this, we are supported by the Deutsches Institut für Nachhaltigkeit & Ökonomie, and our measures are reviewed.
"Gesicherte Nachhaltigkeit" (Assured Sustainability) certificate
Adverse impacts of investment decisions within the meaning of Regulation (EU) 2019/2088 are currently not taken into account at company level. quirion reserves the right to implement these requirements at a later date, once the data situation required for this permits it.
Our aim is that our staff feel comfortable with us, believe in our mission and work on it with passion and dedication. For this it is important that they can combine family and career well, that they are paid in line with performance and that they can develop further with us. Beyond that, we practise open corporate communication and a positive approach to mistakes.
We offer:
The Group has decided not to include any sustainability risks in the remuneration policy.
We are committed to ensuring that all genders are equally represented in the world of work, in order to foster diverse strengths and perspectives in leadership positions and committees. Supporting women on their career path is particularly close to our hearts. The proportion of female employees at Quirin Privatbank is growing continuously, and our supervisory board is already balanced on a parity basis. Since February 2023 we have been a supporting member of the association FidAR e.V., which campaigns for a significant and sustainable increase in the proportion of women on German supervisory boards.
In addition to supporting women within the company, we offer comprehensive support with financial matters for women (and all other genders). To encourage exchange among women and to bring the world of finance closer to them, we regularly hold regional women's events as well as our digital series “She meets Quiri(o)n”. Join us next time!
To promote the health of our staff, we offer a broad range of measures. Every Wednesday, for example, our Berlin office makes use of a qualified running coach to complete an intensive cardio session. This not only clears the mind for new ideas but also helps prevent back problems. The weekly yoga class is also very popular in Berlin and online throughout Germany.
In addition to the sports programme, we offer a wide variety of workplace health management measures, and besides the subsidy for computer glasses, vaccination offers and ergonomic workstations, the mental health of our staff is also important to us. Here we cooperate, among others, with ESUNA and offer coaching on a wide range of topics.
Since 2019, we have determined our remaining CO2 emissions each year by preparing a carbon footprint report. For the first time, we offset these CO2 emissions in 2023 by retiring emission allowances (so-called pollution certificates).
The non-profit association Compensators from Potsdam uses our donation to buy these certificates from the European Emissions Trading System and permanently retires them. This means they are no longer available to industrial companies to cover their emissions, and the companies have to reduce their pollution. The scarcity of certificates leads to price increases. Companies are thus forced to switch to lower-emission technologies.
