Money from the state? Take it.

How it works

The app now, the subsidy in January.

You can start investing right away – with an individual account in the app. The Altersvorsorgedepot, with its allowances and tax relief, is added on 1 January 2027.

Already paying into a Riester contract?

Is your Riester still worth it?

The Altersvorsorgedepot requires no contribution guarantee: more return potential, and price swings in exchange. From 2027 a balance including allowances can be transferred without losing the subsidy – quirion will accept such transfers.

  • €175 Riester fixed basic allowance, at full contribution
  • up to €540 New in 2027 basic allowance in the Altersvorsorgedepot, from €1,800 own contribution – pay in less and you get less than today
Your ETF savings plan for later – state-subsidised.

Two ways. One goal: retirement provision that fits.

Standard

If you want to keep it simple.

The statutory Standard-Depotvertrag: 1 equity ETF and 1 bond ETF, on a prescribed risk path. Whether we offer that contract type is settled with the certification.

Pro

More individuality.

The professionally managed variant: a broadly diversified ETF portfolio with over 13,000 equities and 2,000 bonds. An individual risk path that responds more closely to your personal situation.

You should know who you’re trusting with your money.

Frequently asked questions

When will the Altersvorsorgedepot be available?
The subsidy starts on 1 January 2027. The account cannot be opened before then – but you can reserve a spot now, and your application will be ready on day one. The reform has been enacted and is in force: the Bundestag passed the Altersvorsorgereformgesetz on 27 March 2026, the Bundesrat approved it on 8 May 2026, and it was promulgated in the Federal Law Gazette on 29 May 2026 (BGBl. 2026 I Nr. 156). Some implementation details are still to be set by statutory instrument.
Who qualifies for the state subsidy?
Almost everyone working in Germany: employees, apprentices, civil servants, soldiers, farmers, mini- and midi-jobs that pay into the state pension, employed members of a professional pension scheme, and people insured through the Künstlersozialkasse. Self-employed works too – either covered by the state pension scheme, or under 67 and filing an annual tax return. And it keeps running through stretches without a salary: parental leave, child-raising periods, caring for a relative from care level 2, sickness or transitional benefit, voluntary service, and unemployment benefit after earlier contributions.
How large is the subsidy – and how do I get it?
On the first €360 a year the state adds 50%, on the portion above that up to €1,800 it adds 25% – together at most €540 of basic allowance per year. For each child you receive Kindergeld for, up to €300 is added, and if you are still under 25 at the start of the contribution year, you receive a one-off €200 new-earner bonus. There is nothing to apply for each year: give us a standing allowance request (Dauerzulagenantrag) when you open the account and we collect it for you every year from the central allowance office.
How much may I pay in – and how much do I need for the allowance?
You may pay in up to €6,840 a year; for the allowance, €120 a year has to add up. From €1,800 of your own contributions the basic allowance is fully used up; anything above that you pay in for the return, not for the allowance. You can save monthly, pay in one-off amounts, or combine both.
What are the drawbacks?
Two. The commitment: taking the money out before the payout start counts as harmful use – you repay the allowances and the tax benefits. The gains stay yours, but you pay tax on them at your personal rate. And the choice: not every fund is eligible. We think that is defensible, because the limits keep return and risk in a ratio that actually gets you to your retirement goal. You are not tied to us, though – you can switch provider later without losing the subsidy.
When and how is the money paid out?
Payouts begin between the ages of 65 and 70. After that you either draw a payout plan running to at least age 85, or a lifelong annuity. You can withdraw up to 30% of the account value at the start – without losing the subsidy, and taxed like the monthly pension. The rest is paid monthly and may stay invested. A full lump-sum payout is not provided for.
What is the difference from Riester?
With Riester, at least the contributions paid in must be available when the payout phase begins. The provider has to cover that promise across the whole term, which limits the scope for more volatile investments. With the Altersvorsorgedepot no such promise is required – products without a capital guarantee are explicitly eligible: more return potential, but price swings you have to be able to sit through. The special-expenses deduction is cut differently: with Riester up to €2,100 a year including the allowance counts, under the new rules €1,800 of your own contributions plus the allowance attributable to them. Whether that comes to more or less for you depends on how large your allowance is. An existing Riester contract can run on unchanged – then it stays a legacy contract under the old rules. There are two routes into the new subsidy: you declare irrevocably to your existing provider that the new rules should apply, or you conclude a new subsidised contract after 31 December 2026 – then they apply uniformly to all your contracts. Moving the balance across is a separate step: you cancel the old contract with three months’ notice to the end of a quarter, for the purpose of the transfer. The basis is the Altersvorsorgeverträge-Zertifizierungsgesetz and the Einkommensteuergesetz as they apply from 1 January 2027; the Riester statements describe the statutory minimum requirements, not one provider’s product.
What does the Altersvorsorgedepot cost at quirion?
The legislator caps effective costs for the statutory Standard-Depotvertrag at 1% – no provider may charge more for that contract type. The cap does not apply to other Altersvorsorgedepot contracts. What the Altersvorsorgedepot costs at quirion will be announced before the launch on 1 January 2027. Reserve a spot and you’ll hear it first.
