After the Brexit vote: investors should stay calm

Investors should follow the famous British motto "Keep calm." Broadly diversified portfolios built for the long term can withstand sharp swings, stresses Philipp Dobbert, chief economist at Berlin-based quirin bank AG. Over the medium to long term, the vote's impact on the global economy is unlikely to be noticeable. With one exception: the United Kingdom itself.

The worry that leaving the EU will lead to steep losses in growth, and thus weigh on companies' earnings not only in Britain but also across the wider region, is overblown in the view of quirin bank's experts: "The UK is still the world's ninth-largest economy, but its share of global economic output is small, at just under 2.5%," points out Arndt Kussmann, head of securities analysis at the bank. A European or even global economic downturn triggered by Brexit therefore seems rather unlikely.
