Why does „rebalancing“ reduce risk?

Price fluctuations are constantly shifting the weightings within a portfolio. If, for example, an equity ETF is held in the portfolio and this index rises disproportionately, the ETF takes on a higher weighting compared to other positions. With these shifts, the risk profile of the portfolio changes, which under certain circumstances no longer matches the investor's profile. To restore the original weighting, there is rebalancing.
