Donald Trump's tariff policy has sent the markets on a rollercoaster ride. That is unsettling many investors. We give our assessment of the situation.
First a sharp slide, then a strong recovery: Trump's erratic tariff policy keeps sending the markets off in a new direction. In such a highly emotionally charged environment, the danger of making the wrong investment decisions is especially great.
We'll be giving our assessment of the situation on Thursday, 10 April, from 5 p.m., in Quirin Live, the investor Q&A session run by our parent company, Quirin Privatbank. Please register in advance – you'll then receive the participation link by email in good time. There you can put your questions to our CEO Martin Daut as well as to our experts Philipp Dobbert (chief economist and head of asset management) and Arndt Kussmann (head of investment communication & analysis).
Here, in advance, are the most important connections and guiding principles for crisis situations:
- Specific price movements are fundamentally impossible to forecast – and this is especially true during crisis phases.
- You also have to reckon with larger price swings from time to time. This does not call into question the long-term capability of a globally diversified investment strategy.
- A hasty exit, which may spontaneously seem sensible to you, will almost certainly turn out in the end to be the wrong decision. At the very latest when you miss getting back in at the right time – which happens regularly.
- Even if it should take longer for the markets to stabilise again: this crisis, too, will come to an end. Because not even the presidency of a Donald Trump seriously threatens the efficiency and existence of the market economy system.

In the interest of your long-term investment success, we therefore strongly recommend that you keep a cool head and stay invested in a disciplined way. It takes nerve, but in comparable situations it has always been the right thing to do. This current crisis, too, will in the end be nothing more than a setback within the long-term upward development of the international equity markets.
