The term "Smart City" describes concepts intended to make above all larger cities more livable through the application of state-of-the-art technology. Particular attention is paid to climate-friendly measures. To achieve these goals, the approach relies on the support of highly advanced information and communication technologies.

Dubai is already a highly technologised smart city with more than 90 digitalised public services and around 100 smart technology initiatives. These relate to infrastructure, communication, transport, urban planning, energy use and other areas.

In smart cities, all the components essential to urban life automatically interlock. These include:

• A trouble-free and environmentally friendly energy supply
• An automated water supply and drinking water treatment controlled by modern technologies
• As well as optimized, smooth traffic flows achieved through intelligent networking and environmentally friendly means of transport. All of this makes smart cities more energy-efficient, more comfortable and, overall, more liveable for their residents.
