Cybersecurity refers to measures taken to protect computers, servers, mobile devices, electronic systems, networks and data against malicious external attacks. It is also referred to as IT security or electronic data security (cyber security).

Nowadays, when everything is interconnected, even a small disruption in the IT systems communicating with one another is enough to paralyse entire production sites or supply chains, for example. The ever-increasing digitalisation and the global interconnection of economies make security in the virtual world a major challenge. For everything to run smoothly, the security of IT systems must be guaranteed. Critical infrastructure objects in particular (power and water supply plants), hospitals, or parliaments and ministries must also be protected against hostile access.
